CS75 and CS75 Plus — two cars, one number

The CS75 Plus arrived as a more heavily styled, more expensive version of the CS75, and for an extended period both were sold at the same time. They are not trim levels of one another; they differ in bodywork, interior and equipment.

Used advertisements routinely drop the suffix, and photographs alone are not always conclusive once a car has been through a facelift. The descriptor section of the VIN separates them, and position ten fixes the model year.

That combination — model line plus build year — is what tells you whether the price being asked belongs to the car being offered. In a low-resolution advertisement a facelifted CS75 and a Plus can look close to identical, and the gap between their values is not small.

Reading a Changan VIN from left to right

Positions one to three are the World Manufacturer Identifier. An L in position one means the vehicle received its final assembly in China, and the two characters after it identify the manufacturer. Positions four to eight describe the model line, body type, restraint system and powertrain.

Position nine is a check digit, calculated arithmetically from the other sixteen characters, which is why a transposed or invented VIN fails validation instantly. Position ten is the model year, position eleven the assembly plant, and the last six characters are the sequential build number.

Decoding is free. It confirms what the vehicle is; it does not confirm what condition it is in.

UNI-T, UNI-K and the move upmarket

The UNI series was introduced as a more design-led range above the CS models, with the UNI-T as the compact entry and the UNI-K as the larger vehicle. They share engineering with the mainstream SUVs but are positioned and priced differently.

For a used buyer that positioning matters, because equipment levels and powertrain options do not map neatly between the two ranges. A decode identifies the model line as the manufacturer defined it rather than as a seller describes it.

Export naming has also varied, so a vehicle sold under one name locally may appear under another in its original documentation.

Deepal and Avatr — the electric side of the group

Deepal is Changan's electric and range-extended brand, sold as a separate marque with its own model line. Avatr is a higher-end electric venture developed with partners from outside the traditional automotive industry.

Electric and range-extender vehicles make the build year unusually important. Battery chemistry, charging behaviour, thermal management and software have all changed across production runs, and a listing rarely specifies which revision it is selling.

Confirming the model year through the VIN is the starting point for establishing which battery and which software generation a specific car carries.

Where the VIN stops and the records begin

Everything a decode returns describes the vehicle as it left the line. Collision repairs, odometer corrections, finance agreements, insurance write-offs and recall completions are all created afterwards, and none of them are encoded in the number.

For a Chinese-built car that was registered domestically before export, those records sit in Chinese systems. A history check run in the destination country begins at first local registration and cannot see behind it.

That blind spot is the reason a decode should be followed by a proper history search rather than treated as the end of the process.
