Chinese Spec vs. European Spec — What's Different
Chinese spec vs European spec is not a question about badge engineering or trim levels. The same model name, built in the same plant in the same week, can leave the line as two materially different cars depending on which market it was destined for — different battery chemistry, different driver assistance calibration, different climate hardware, different software.
This matters to anyone buying an imported vehicle, because the specification a car was built to is fixed at the factory and cannot be changed afterwards. What can be changed is what a seller calls it.
Why one model becomes several different cars
Export markets impose their own requirements. European type approval sets standards for lighting, emissions, crash performance, electromagnetic compatibility and driver assistance behaviour that a domestic Chinese vehicle was never engineered against.
Manufacturers therefore build market-specific variants, often on the same line, differing in hardware and in software calibration. The VIN's descriptor section records which variant a given car is — which is why the number, rather than the brochure, is where a specification question gets settled.
The gap is widest on vehicles designed for China first and exported afterwards, which describes most of the newer electric marques. A model engineered around European regulation from the outset diverges far less between its home and export versions.
Battery chemistry, range figures and how they are measured
Electric models are frequently offered with lithium iron phosphate cells in one market and nickel-manganese-cobalt in another. The two behave differently in cold weather, tolerate different charging habits and degrade on different curves, so charging advice written for one is wrong for the other.
Range figures are also not comparable. China quotes range under its own test cycle, Europe uses WLTP, and the same car will carry noticeably different headline numbers in each. A listing quoting a Chinese figure to a European buyer is not necessarily dishonest, but it is not a like-for-like comparison.
Safety equipment and driver assistance calibration
Export cars are commonly fitted with additional restraint and assistance hardware, and their assistance systems are recalibrated for European road markings, sign shapes and speed limit conventions. A domestic car reading European signage with Chinese calibration behaves unpredictably.
Emergency call systems are the clearest divide. European cars carry eCall, tied to European emergency infrastructure. Chinese domestic cars carry the domestic equivalent, which does nothing outside China.
Crash structure can differ too, and it is not something a buyer can inspect. Where a model has been tested and rated under a European assessment programme, that rating describes the European build — not a domestic car wearing the same badge.
Infotainment, connectivity and language
Domestic-market infotainment is built around Chinese services — mapping, voice assistants, streaming and connected features tied to servers inside China. Outside the country, some of it simply stops working, and the interface may not offer a full translation.
Over-the-air updates follow the same pattern. A car provisioned for the domestic market may never receive updates abroad, which matters on vehicles whose driver assistance and battery management are improved through software rather than hardware.
Check whether the car can be paired to a regional app account at all. Some connected functions are tied to an account type that cannot be created outside China, and no dealer intervention will change that after the sale.

Climate hardware for cold and hot markets
Cars built for northern Europe often include a heat pump, battery preconditioning, heated seats, mirrors and washer jets, and cold-weather coolant specification. A car specified for southern China may have none of it, which shows up as sharply reduced winter range and slow charging in low temperatures.
The reverse applies to Gulf and African markets, where cooling capacity and heat-resistant materials are specified for sustained high ambient temperatures a European car is never asked to handle.
Telling which specification is in front of you
Decode the VIN. Position one gives the country of final assembly and the descriptor section encodes the variant, the powertrain and the restraint configuration as built.
Then look for physical confirmation: the charging port type, the certification labels in the door aperture, the language options in the infotainment menu, and whether the type approval documentation names a European approval authority. A seller's description is a claim; the labels and the VIN are the record.

Can a Chinese-spec car be converted to European spec?
