The 17 characters, section by section
A chassis number splits into three parts: the World Manufacturer Identifier (characters 1–3), the Vehicle Descriptor Section (4–9, covering model, body and a check digit), and the Vehicle Identifier Section (10–17, covering model year, plant and serial number). Characters I, O and Q are never used, to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.
How to tell a Chinese chassis number
The first character shows the country of manufacture, and every vehicle built in China starts with L. Characters 2 and 3 complete the manufacturer code, which identifies the maker — BYD, Chery, Geely, Changan, Great Wall (Haval), SAIC (MG) and others each have their own codes. The 10th character is the model year: for example N is 2022, P is 2023, R is 2024, S is 2025 and T is 2026.
